Hun-Chung Lee, Korea, 2016
Low table in glazed ceramic.
...
While this dynamic low table at first appears to be an outlier in Lee’s oeuvre, it is firmly within the historical Korean visual lexicon. This piece recalls jogakbo, an improvisational Korean patchwork technique in which fabric scraps are stitched together to create bojagi, wrapping clothes for use around the home. Lee references this everyday material in the low table made of glazed ceramic, with gilding instead of seams between each different “patch”. -

Joaquim Tenreiro, Brazil, 1950
Checkerboard coffee table in ebonized wood.
...
This coffee table designed by Joaquim Tenreiro in 1950 showcases both the colonial and Concretist influences in his work. The mashrabiya (later known as muxarabi) is an architectural element of Arabic residences that had been incorporated into Portuguese buildings and taken to Brazil since its first settlement. The way in which Tenreiro utilizes the trellis as a utilitarian surface follows this trend, but the play with volume and shadow must also be put in context with the emerging Concretist movement in Brazil at the time. -
