R 20th Century is pleased to present a two-person exhibition of works by Paula Hayes and Wendell Castle at the International Art + Design Fair 2006.
Well-known for her use of ephemeral and organic mediums, Paula Hayes questions the idea of living plants as authored artworks with her glass terrariums and silicone planters where plants are literally self-contained in unique hand-blown glass or silicone forms. Paula Hayes was also selected by the fair to create a centerpiece for the venue for which she will be debuting an installation of her new series of birdhouses and a birdbath.
We are also debuting a rare collection of stack-laminated jewelry boxes and original furniture from the late 60s and early 70s by the iconic American furniture-maker Wendell Castle. Celebrated for creating unique pieces that often meander beyond the traditional boundaries of functional furniture, he blurs the lines between art and design. A master of form, Castle's work represents a unique investigation of the qualities and possibilities of wood executed with the highest level of craftsmanship.
